Chapter 21

“We got trouble, boss!” he said, almost out of breath. Judging by the look on his face, it was serious. See, Walk was an ex-con trying to go legit and times like these caused him to go in flip mode and revert back. Q turned to face the monitor, causing Harlem to look, too. That’s when they both noticed Dre trying to fight security and without a word, Q was out the door with Walk on his heels.

Harlem headed towards the door, but stopped to get a better look at the picture on Q’s shelf and when she got close enough, she could see it was a picture of her, Q and the babies on the day they were leaving the hospital. Before Harlem could reach the bottom of the stairs, she heard gunshots. Everyone was running and all you could hear was ladies screaming.

Harlem quickly ran back upstairs to Q’s office and locked herself in the bathroom as she cried and shook uncontrollably. She wasn’t expecting this. She didn’t know if her friends were okay; or even Q, Pres and Presley, for that matter. Seeing Q today sent her back to those days before she’d found out that he was her brother. Whether he was her brother or not, the more that she tried to make herself hate him, the more she loved him. She closed her eyes and said a prayer for all her loved ones out there in that mayhem.

Harlem had stayed in the bathroom for so long she didn’t even know she had fallen asleep until she felt someone pick her up. When she opened her eyes, she saw it was Walk carrying her. He carried her down a long, dark hall that led to an exit door. He then proceeded to put her in the back of a Hummer. He got in the driver’s seat and pulled off without saying a word.

“Where’s Q?” she asked him as she looked around at her surroundings wondering where they were going.

“He’s at the hospital,” he told her, making sure to keep his eyes on the road. After learning she was his boss’s wifey, he knew better than to come at her.

“At the hospital? What happened and where are my friends?” she asked frantically.

“Boss was shot at by some lame ass nigga named Dreon and he took a hit,” he said in a calm tone, as if it was nothing to be shot.

“Is he okay? Where was he shot?” She was wiping tears that freely flowed down her face as she ran off question after question. If Q doesn’t pull through this, she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself for keeping the kids from him for so long.

“Sup?” Walk said into his cell phone. “Okay, that’s good to hear. So what’s next? Okay, yeah, she’s with me. Naw, she all right; just a little upset that she didn’t know what was going on. All right, boss.” When Harlem heard him say boss, she was hoping he was talking about Q.
